Facebook Originally Planned to Auction Off Vanity URLs. Thanks, Facebook

16 Jun

As you know, last weekend facebook let its users pick their own URLs. But what you didn’t know, is that they were planning to auction off the best names to the highest bidder. If anyone were to actually pay for a vanity URL, then they are officially retarded. There is no advantage to having your facebook link say www.facebook.com/johnsmith. That just makes it easier for prospective employers, ex girlfriends, your parents, identity thieves, or people that could potentially want to kill you, to find you.

“Facebook’s first idea was to auction them off in a standard “ascending” auction, where the URL and user name would have gone to highest bidder at the highest bid. The problem there was Facebook would have had to close millions of real-time auctions in a very short period of time, creating a tremendous load on its servers. Facebook also worried about giving wealthier users advantages over poorer ones.”

Thanks facebook, for giving us something that’s supposed to be free in the first place.
